Sol Bermann is the Chief Privacy Officer for the State of Ohio. As Ohio's Chief Privacy Officer, he serves as a subject-matter expert on the protection of sensitive data and personally identifiable information. Among other duties, Sol coordinates the development and implementation of privacy and security policies, standards, and best practices, recommends legislative changes, tracks national and international privacy developments and trends, and helps develop content for Ohio's privacy and security awareness and training program. His multiple roles help the state of Ohio properly safeguard the sensitive information of Ohio's citizens, while respecting the open nature of Ohio's public record laws.
His involvement in the privacy field dates back over ten years, and includes the development and coordination of the nationally-recognized PrivacyCon conference series, work with the International Association of Privacy Professionals, and service as Chair of the Supreme Court of Ohio's sub-committee on privacy and public access. Sol is a frequent presenter on issues related to privacy and data security, and is co-author, with Professor Peter Swire, of the Official Reference for the Certified Information Privacy Professional.
Before assuming his current position, Sol was the Associate Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Law and Policy Studies at the Ohio State University's Moritz College of Law, and the Managing Editor of I/S: a Journal of Law and Policy for the Information Society. He remains an adjunct faculty member of OSU's International Studies Program, where he teaches on issues related to law, policy and civil liberties.
Sol received his B.A. from Beloit College, an M.A. in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia, and his J.D. from the Ohio State University's Moritz College of Law.
